Bodywork is a form of therapeutic massage therapy which involves physical manipulation of the body, soft tissue or energy fields. There are a wide variety of Bodywork techniques, all of which require specialized training to ensure that practitioners understand anatomy and potential contraindications.

While many think of massage therapy as a means of relaxation, bodywork is about improvement in function and reduction of pain. Bodywork helps with chronic muscular pain and injury rehabilitation and reduces inflammation-related pain caused by conditions such as arthritis, trigger points  and tendonitis. It is generally integrated with other massage techniques.

The most common cause of pain, according to Dr. Janett Travell, is trigger points. Trigger points are knots in your muscles that create stiffness in the muscle and pain in the body, sometime over the trigger point, but more often in other areas, which causes great confusion.

One of the most frustrating things about trigger points is that they are only in the area of pain about 30% of the time. So most of the time, if you rub the pain, you are rubbing the wrong spot!

First, choose your area of pain. Then a list of muscles that refer pain to that area will appear off that area like in the image below.

Then choose a muscle. It will bring you to an image of the muscle with the trigger points as x's in the picture. As you mouse over each trigger point, the pain referral area lights up.

Push on your own trigger points and see if you get referred pain. If you do, I recommend printing that picture and working on it several times per day until the pain subsides.

Then choose to go back in the upper right hand corner, and explore the next muscle that refers pain to that area.
